Update on St. John’s ABWK House

This weekend we will be painting on different times than sent out previously. The Tour de Kota group will be painting on the house from 1-5 this afternoon (Monday, June 6) so we will be painting from 5:30 to 8:30 tonight to continue the process. The other night this week we will be painting is Wednesday night from 5:30 to 8:30 or so. We won’t be able to paint on Saturday, June 11. We will continue the schedule next week. Please let Susan know (480-0006) if you can stop by tonight or Wednesday and help paint. The homeowners really do appreciate it!

Seeking New Executive Director

HFHECSD is seeking a new executive director. We are very sad to see our current director, Barb Johnson, leave this month. But we are very happy to wish her well in her new position as executive director of the Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity! We are now in the search process for a new executive director.

2011 ABWK Season Started

St. John Lutheran Church is kicking off our second A Brush With Kindness season by painting a home in Madison. Members of St. John and anyone else who would like to help out can volunteer on these dates:

Wednesday, June 1 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 4 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 or 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, June 8 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 11 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 or 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, June 15 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 18 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 or 4:00 p.m.

On Saturdays we will need also need people to provide food for the volunteers. Susan Nordaune is coordinating the volunteers for this house, so please give her a call at 480-0006 if you can help out.

Sponsor a House for $200

We already have seven houses in Madison, Wentworth, and Ramona that qualified for our A Brush With Kindness program this year and more applications to be accepted. We are gearing up to paint & fix! For a $200 sponsorship, you will help provide for minor repairs on one house we will be working on this summer. Last year this included purchasing window caulk and glazing, replacement trim wood, fascia boards, shutters, doors, porch steps, exterior light, mail box, dryer vents, and paint supplies. Sponsor recognition will be given in ads and at the home.

Habitat Achieves #6 on the “Builder 100″ List

Due to the combined building efforts of U.S. Habitat for Humanity affiliates, volunteers and donors, Habitat for Humanity International ranks as the sixth largest homebuilder in the United States, with 6,032 closings in 2010, according to Builder magazine’s annual survey. Each year, the magazine compiles information from U.S. builders and lists the top 100.

Even in these difficult times, Habitat’s 2010 home closings increased. Through the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative and with Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds, Habitat helped an additional 2,327 families with repairs to their homes in the United States. In East Central South Dakota, Habitat assisted 3 homeowners in Madison with minor repairs and exterior paint to restore pride in their home and neighborhood.

Habitat for Humanity of East Central South Dakota with an office located in Madison, is starting their painting season in the next weeks for the summer of 2011. St. John Lutheran Church of Madison has adopted the first house, located on South Harth Avenue, just north of the old Garfield School. The Knights of Columbus, Trinity Lutheran Church, and the United Methodist Church, all of Madison, will be adopting houses this summer as well. The Habitat affiliate will be accepting other sponsorships as well. The Board of Directors accepted the goal of 5 houses for 2011. So far, they have extended that to 7 houses and have a few more applications waiting approval. With some generous donations, Habitat will be able to furnish the primer and paint for these houses. With more donations, Habitat will be able to do minor repairs with no charge to the homeowners.

A Brush with Kindness is a Habitat for Humanity program that has the basic premise of doing minor repairs and painting the exterior of homes. The homes must be homeowner occupied. The homeowners must be unable to paint the house themselves, either physically or financially. Volunteers donate their time to complete this neighborhood pride project. Many volunteers make for light work. Summer Painting Volunteers Needed

We’re looking forward to a great summer for our A Brush With Kindness projects. We already have seven houses accepted for this year in Madison, Wentworth, and Ramona—-and more to be approved!

Please consider helping us scrape and paint these homes this summer. If you have a team of people ready to adopt a house, let us know soon. We’ll also be looking for individuals to paint throughout the summer and early fall. Plus, we’ll need volunteers to provide food to our workers and to supervise workers for one house.

Volunteers Needed for Deconstruction Project

Yes, you read that correctly. This time we’re in need of volunteers to deconstruct a house and farm outbuildings. The salvaged materials will be taken to the Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Volunteers are needed next week for 4-6 hours. The location is 3.5 miles east of Madison. If you can help out, please contact our executive director, Barb Johnson, at 427-9906.

Are you a limited-income homeowner who needs help painting your home? Or do you know someone who is? We are taking applications now for this summer’s A Brush With Kindness projects!
